Kinja'd!!!

This is exactly what I fucking needed today :/

Any SSD brand recommendations? This one was a Crucial and it only lasted three years. I want to try something else.

Have you tried turning it on and off again?

Only about three dozen times.

That sucks . Is there only one drive in the machine? Got any other machines to try and recover data?

Still might be able to get info off of that with one of those sata usb adapters. I have had 2 or 3 of our drives go bad, they have all worked enough to get the data off, but won’t work as boot drives.

If you want anecdotes,  I’ve got a Corsair I’ve been using for over five years.

Tried swapping in an old HDD from my last computer and it booted up fine.

I just made a backup of my important stuff last week so I'm all set as far as data recovery.

This reminds me, I should get my backup drive reconnected.

Nice work! Well of the two or three of our drives that have failed, one was a crucial so I’d steer you away from them, although I have bought a lot of crucial drives and memory and never had a problem. Just FYI t he other one that failed was a “Kingston” and the last was a Samsung. I buy them from whomever is selling them cheap. I was sure the lot of “Adata” ones I bought would be the first to go, but nothing yet.

On the pricier end, I’ve had good luck so far with my Samsung 850 EVO. It’s 4 years old. Not sure what the newest is like.

I’ve also had good luck with SanDisk SSDs in some lower end computers.

I have a Samsung Evo SSD, been using it for about 5 years and no issues.

Sorry, no useful advice for you. I don’t have any strong recommendations on SSDs. I’m currently using a Samsung 970 EVO m2 drive in my main machine, which is fast and hasn’t died, but it’s only been about 6 months with that one. I’ve never had an SSD fail on me at all though (using Samsung, Sandisk, Crucial, OCZ, Corsair, and Western Digital ). Frankly all of them seem vastly more reliable than any spinning disk (I’d say probably 90% of the past 10 HDDs I’ve bought have failed within 30- years.)

Samsung or GTFO for SSDs

On the upside, storage is super cheap right now.

I know, right? I can get a 1TB drive for like $40 more than what I paid for a 256gb one three years ago.

I only backed it up because it gave me a scare last week... rebooted it to apply updates and BIOS popped up saying I didn't have any bootable drives attached.

I only made a backup because it gave me a scare last week. BIOS kept claiming there was no bootable drive attached. Had to crack the case & reinsert the SSD to get it to boot.

Maybe maybe some files got corrupted from being partly unplugged. you can always try restoring your backup ( assuming it’s an image of the drive).

Have you have you run any Diagnostics on the drive yet?

I can launch startup r epair on it but if it doesn’t crash partway through, it says it can't do anything.
